인류의 역사는 ‘개인’의 역사였다. 왕과 여왕, 지도자와 사상가, 그리고 삶의 길을 찾아 고군분투해 온 수많은 개인들의 이야기였다. 동시에 그것은 자율성과 자기 확인, 개인적 목표 달성을 향한 끊임없는 탐색, 즉 ‘개체화(individuation)’의 역사이기도 했다. 그러나 오늘날, 이 개체화의 과정은 끝을 맞이하고 그 반대 방향으로 변형되고 있다. 우리는 이제 ‘탈개체화(disindividuation)’의 시대로 들어섰다. 개인은 점차 고유성을 잃어가며, 사회는 ‘디비주얼(dividuals)’ 사회, 즉 자신의 유일성을 자각하지 못하고 ‘나’라는 감각을 상실한 존재들로 이루어진 사회로 변해가고 있다.
이 변화를 주도하는 가장 큰 요인은 바로 기술이다. 사람들은 외로움을 달래고 사회적 공백을 메우기 위해 기술적 장치에 점점 더 의존하지만, 그 결과 그들은 더 이상 ‘자신’으로 인식되지 않는다. 대신 그들은 이미지, 텍스트, 과거의 디지털 흔적—즉, 정체성의 모든 정보를 담고 있는 기기의 ‘소유자’로만 인식된다. 개인은 점점 사생활을 포기하고, 자신과 하나가 되어버린 기기와 모든 것을 공유한다. 이렇게 고유성을 잃은 디비주얼은 타인 및 외부 현실과 제대로 관계 맺을 수 없는 고독한 존재가 된다. 끝없이 새로워지는 정보의 흐름 속, 화면 속의 세계에 잠식된 채, 그저 지금을 무의미하게 ‘살아남는’ 것만으로 만족하는 시대 속에서, 저자는 우리는 점점 희망이 사라진 미래를 향해 나아가고 있다고 경고한다.

사회학자, 저널리스트. 피렌체대학교 전임 강사를 역임했고 이탈리아 카라라 국립미술원(Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara)의 원장을 지냈다. 주요 저서로는 ‘유동하는 현대Liquid Modernity’로 잘 알려진 사회학자 ‘지그문트 바우만’과 함께 집필한 <State of Crisis>를 비롯해, <The End of Equality>, <Interregnum: Beyond Liquid Modernity>, <Ethical Violence>, <Post-Society> 등이 있다.
