중국의 텅 빈 아무도 살지 않는 대도시에서 영감을 받은 이 소설은 시앙이라는 청년이 시드니 중국 영사관에서 통역사로 일하다가 중국어를 한 마디도 하지 못하고 전적으로 구글 번역에 의존해 왔다는 사실이 밝혀져 해고당하는 이야기로 시작된다. 이 사건은 '#BadChinese'라는 해시태그로 온라인에서 화제가 되고, 이를 계기로 영화감독 베이비 바오(Baby Bao)의 주목을 받게 되고, 바오는 중국의 유령 도시인 포트 만 투(Port Man Tou)를 거대한 영화 세트로 활용하여 고대 신화를 영화화하려는 프로젝트에 시앙을 참여시키려 한다. 포트 만 투는 실제와 연극이 혼재된 공간으로, 시민들은 모두 연기자이며, 시앙은 이곳에서 자신의 정체성과 현실에 대한 의문을 품게 된다. 이야기는 고대 중국 황제의 통치 시기로 전환된다. 황제는 자신의 권력을 유지하기 위해 황실 도서관을 파괴하고, 자신을 이상화한 수천 개의 복제본을 만들도록 명령한다. 이러한 극단적인 통제 속에서 황제의 후궁 우얼은 파괴된 책들을 한 장씩 다시 쓰며 지식과 기억을 복원하려는 비밀스러운 여정을 시작한다. 전설, 신화, 상징이 어우러지면서, 이 두 서사는 'Death of a Pagoda'라는 고대 문서를 중심으로 연결되며, 현실과 허구, 과거와 현재, 권력과 저항 등의 주제를 교차시킨다.
